What is Time Tracking?

The practice of logging time spent on tasks or projects, used for billing, project profitability, and capacity planning.

Time tracking captures how long work actually takes. It's used for client billing (agencies, consultancies), project profitability analysis (was this job actually profitable?), and capacity planning (how much can the team really take on). Tracking can be manual (start / stop timers, hand-entered hours) or automatic (a desktop agent that watches active app + idle state).

When to use

Automatic tracking via a desktop agent is more accurate but only works if it respects the people doing the work - no screenshots, no keystroke logging, easy pause. See Kovarro's tracker for an example of that design point.
